For the past week and a half I have been in Olympia, WA (or in journey to it). My access to my blog has been limited; I’m typing this with thumbs from my cell phone. I know there are faithful, praying brothers and sisters in Christ who may not be getting updates to the latest news in the life of the Borden family, so I felt the need to respond “thumbnaciously.”

I will update with greater detail and share some of my journal entries in the coming week, but for now…just the facts: I secured a job upon arrival to Olympia that provides healthcare benefits for the family, I secured living arrangements within a school dist. that meets with our needs, and we are already establishing a spiritual-community network base. All of this a gift of God’s provision and to Him goes the glory.

Our need is great as we still need to raise $5,000.00 (plus) for our relocation. We are selling many of our possessions, but are far short of our need. Please continue to pray, or if you can and are willing, click on the “support ministry” link above to find information how to help us financially.

Dear faithful readers… I apologize for the lack of updates on the blog lately. I’ve been doing this (the icrucified website and blog) for going on eight years now. Long before blogging became in vogue or the marketing tool that it is for so many people today. I’ve blogged as a means of accountability for my life mission and goals and to keep in touch with my friends and family. During my blog history there have been ebbs and flows of my words; life does that. I hope you understand.

So, let me catch you up on the latest Scoop from the Borden Clan.

For the next few days we’ll be in West Point, NY for the commencement exercises leading up to the graduation of our eldest son, Stefan, from the United States Military Academy. There will be much pomp and circumstance over the next few days and we plan to update you through some of the other social networking vehicles I’ve come to enjoy (Twitter and Facebook). I’m sure you’ll see some pictures here too at some point or another.

We are continuing our transition planning our departure from Western, NY and excited about our cross-country move to Olympia, WA. If you are unaware of what this is all about, you can find out more here (and you might consider partnering with us financially to help us offset the moving expenses). There will be much more on this endeavor as the dates of the move draw nearer, but for now…we are still trying to tie up loose ends and make the departure a smooth one as we leave our existing ministry responsibilities with new and capable hands. Next week I will be leaving to join one of our new ministry team members in Southern California. We will drive together north to Olympia, WA where I will help him and his family move in to their home and (hopefully) find a new residence for the Borden family. Please keep this in prayer. I am also hopeful that I will get at least one job interview as we will need employment to support us during the first stages of our new church plant.

Our big move date is tentatively scheduled for June 30^th and as I said we are only about one-third of the way to gathering the costs of relocation. We are selling many of our personal belongings including our automobile (we’ll buy a smaller and older model vehicle when we arrive in Washington with the proceeds…again, hopefully).

Finally, and most importantly, we are greatly encouraged during this season with the abundant presence of God in our life. He is guiding and “speaking” to us daily in so many ways. As I recently told a treasured friend of ours; “Finally, my heart and head are exploding with Holy Spirit inspired meditation, contemplation, planning, and ideating.” I can’t wait to share more with you all. Please keep us in prayer, and stay tuned!

Day 12: Homeward Bound and Answers in Genesis

Still making our way North to NY state…much of the drive today was without event. We listened to an audiobook along the way this time, Affabel, by John Bevere. It is an allegory about the Christian life. I thought it was good and could provide some excellent family discussion. It probably would have for us except for the fact that two of our boys are in California and Josh was asleep. Nonetheless, we (Laurie and I) enjoyed it.

We arrived at the intersection of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky and spent the late afternoon at the Creation Museum (Answers in Genesis). I think it was very well done and the quality of the displays and wax figures was excellent. I think, with regard to Creation, that many of the explanations and alternative viewpoints of intelligent design were very well presented and some of them highly plausible. In fact, many of them I do believe. Some, on the other hand, were quite a stretch (in my mind) and hard for me to accept; of course, I’m no scientist and have no basis for what is or is not other than what I can conceive in my own mind. I guess this is where I come to the point of saying at some place in the life of every person as they journey the path of their faith, they will have to come to a point of acceptance of God’s word. You either trust Him with what He has passed down to us or you don’t. Trusting Him does not mean that we have to understand all the details of how things are, or how they came to be… That’s my position. I don’t understand all the details of Creation. I know what God has given us and I just don’t get tripped up on things that I don’t understand.

We had a great time and I wish we’d arrived earlier because we missed some of the displays and the nature hike outside of the museum. Oh well, maybe there will be a next time.

Laurie and Josh are ready for the Holiday Inn Express breakfast buffet, so I better roll. We’re on the final leg of our homeward bound journey, so the next update will include our arrival at home and me typing at my familiar dining room table. Peace and Grace be yours this day!

Days 8 & 9: Catching Up…

Sorry for the lack of updates the past couple of days. It has been a very busy and family-filled blur. The weekend was great…meeting all my expectations and then some. I so much enjoyed talking to my relatives and catching up on their lives. I didn’t mislead you with the promise of pictures either; I have well over 200 that I still have yet to go through. The pictures require cropping and editing to bring out the most in them, so it will probably be a little while before I can sit down to do all that. I promise to share them when the editing gets completed though; “cross my heart.”

I picked out a few pictures to include in this post to tie you over until I can put up more for a slideshow. Most of these are cousins, nephews, and a niece with an uncle thrown in for good measure. I look forward to sharing more in the coming days; I’m really pleased about what I was able to capture with my camera, lots of memories.

Well, I think it’s time to get cleaned up. I have been left behind by my family. My dad took the boys out to lunch and a movie; my mom took Laurie, my sister, and my sister-in-law out for a “girl’s afternoon out.” I’m not sure how I got abandoned, but I’m thinking I shouldn’t let this opportunity pass. I’ll go hit up Popeye’s Chicken or a BBQ buffet where no one will keep score on what I get to eat (wink).

We take Stefan and Garrett to Jackson, MS tomorrow for the next leg of their summer adventure (they’re heading out to LAX for the Summer X-Games). I don’t know if I’ll be able to update the blog before now and tomorrow night, but I’ll try to post up something. Until then, Peace!

Day 5:

[Started to post this last night, but it was just a little too late…my eyes were closing on me. Sorry for the delay, but here ya go! Now, I got to get started on our next day’s adventure!]

No rain yesterday…so we hit the road a vistin’ heading over to bro-in-law Mike’s house in West Monroe. It was a great time of talking, playing games, swimming, and other stuffs…but in general, just enjoying the time together. It is always a great visit with Mike’s beautiful and loving family and yesterday was no exception. It is hard to say what the highlight of the day spent with Mike and family was, so rather than attempt to narrow it down, we just figured to go back over to their house today for a reevaluation. I think we have a miniature golf tournament on tap for the day. I’ll probably have to hold back on my PGA level putt-putt skills so the rest of the players can have a good time…(said with tongue firmly in cheek).

After we left the Lewis’ we headed just down the road (literally less than a couple miles away) to my brother Bradley’s house. We hung out without much of an agenda and enjoyed local cultural cuisine and a specialty of North Louisiana, Johnny’s Pizza…home of the Sweep the Kitchen! Woooo Hooooo! It was great! The rest of the evening Bradley and I played guitar together and worked on a song I have written. I’m new at the song writing craft and trying to get help from those with more experience; Brad has been writing his own music and mixing his songs for over 20 years now. I think he has a thing or 500 to teach me.

So, anyway, that was pretty much yesterday…stay tuned for today’s update later this evening (if I can keep my eyes open when we get home)

How bout a little Borden Family update? I mean…if you’re interested. What’s with the title of this blog post? Well, I’m glad you asked (even if you didn’t); it gives me a chance to brag up me and my precious wife’s 21st anniversary! Yep, 21 marvelous-wonderful years of wedded bliss…and I mean that! There is no sarcasm at all in my words; I am truly a blessed man in so many, many ways. So, anyway…with this being a New Year, my anniversary, and me not sending out any Christmas letter updates…I thought I’d share a newsletter with you. The 63 day New Testament Challenge our church family was taking together has ended (yesterday). I’m sure that some lives have been changed and I’m expectant over the fruit we will see born from the challenge in the coming months and year. It was a great exercise in community!

The ending of the NTC means that I will return to my own blog fulltime. My attentions have been divided as I maintained and adminstrated the Valley Chapel blog during our challenge series. It’s good to be back; look forward to more consistant posting beginning today.

I just finished the book Vintage Jesus by Mark Driscoll; good stuff…no, great stuff actually, and I was challenged by many points that he brought out in this work. (Oh, I should mention that he shares authorship of this book with Gerry Breshears) Essentially, the book is a primer of sorts in systematic theology; specifically Christology, the study of Jesus. This is the first in a series of books that are intended to explore the great doctrines of the Bible. If this book, Vintage Jesus, is any indication of what the series will be look like on whole…we are in for a treat. I think the tone and timbre of this work is suitable for laypersons as well as clergy, high school students or seminarians, and/or the curious seeker, new Christian, or “crusty-curmudgeon pew veteran.” Anyone reading this book will stand to gain insight and inspiration; I am sure. The next book in the series, Vintage Church, is already in process and is scheduled for release sometime in January of 2009 (looking forward to this one!). Read the rest of this entry »
