I have to say that I had my reservations when I saw the title of this latest book from Bruce Wilkinson, but after having spent some time with it my skepticism alert meter has dropped down to below warning levels. The subtitle had me on alert; “7 Keys to a Life of Predictable Miracles” sounds way too close for comfort like the Word of Faith doctrine (aka prosperity gospel) I consider to be false teaching. However, after spending some time with this book, You Were Born for This, I don’t think it espouses false teaching at all. I’m still not entirely comfortable with the way Wilkinson uses a formulaic approach to (what amounts to) practicing the presence of God, but I am in general agreement with what he shares in the book.
I don’t want to give away the twists and turns of the plot, but suffice it to say this: Jesus promised He would not leave us or forsake us. Jesus promised He would send us a Counselor and Guide to teach us, remind us, and help us to walk in His ways. The promise of the indwelling Spirit of God to believers is an incredible gift to Christ’s Church. He (Jesus) promises we can walk in the Presence and Counsel of the Triune God each and every day. This is a miracle of the highest magnitude and an Everyday Miracle we should never take for granted. While the method of communicating this truth might be a little askew for my liking in this book, I think the essence of the message is accurate and worth a read. People communicate and receive communication differently and I think there is a large audience of people that may be served very well by the message in You Were Born for This.
Anyone can do a good deed, but some good works can only happen by a direct intervention from God. Around the world these acts are called miracles—not that even religious people expect to see one any time soon. But what would happen if millions of ordinary people walked out each morning expecting God to deliver a miracle through them to a person in need? You Were Born for This starts with the dramatic premise that everyone at all times is in need of a miracle, and that God is ready to meet those needs supernaturally through ordinary people who are willing to learn how Heaven works.
In the straightforward, story-driven, highly motivating style for which he is known, Wilkinson describes how anyone can help others experience miracles in such universally significant arenas of life as finances, practical help, relationships, purpose, and spiritual growth.
You Were Born for This will change how readers see their world, and what they expect God can do through them to meet real needs. They will master seven simple tools of service, and come to say with confidence, “I want to deliver a supernatural gift from God to someone in need today—and now I know how!”
