One-Two Punch
I started a couple new devotional reads this year (along with others I continue from this past year). One of the devotional books was given to me as a gift from a member of my local church. It is titled; “Renew My Heart: Daily Wisdom from the Writings of John Wesley” ISBN: 1-58660-711-1
This devotional contains a year’s worth of excerpts from Wesley’s most treasured sermons, compiled according to topic for daily reading. I have found this a fresh way to work through the sermons of John Wesley. What I had not anticipated was the timeliness of the readings/sermons coinciding with other reading/study/pondering taking place in my life. Good Stuff.
Devotional reading number two is from D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Walking with God Day by Day ISBN: 158134516X. I was first introduced to Lloyd-Jones over 20 years ago when I found his commentary on Paul’s letter to the Romans; a truly fantastic expository work (in my opinion). This devotional takes excerpts from many of Dr. Lloyd-Jones’ works over his life and ministry compiling them into thoughtful daily readings.
The combined effect of both readings is surprising to me in how similar the topics are coming from different theological and doctrinal positions. Lloyd-Jones would camped in the reformed/Calvin arena while Wesley attends to an Armenian stance. I think it is humorous how closely the respective devotions align with one another considering their differences. I am being challenged and educated in a delightful and thought-provoking way through my daily reading with these works. I recommend them to anyone as they are certainly capable of standing on their own…or taken together, as I am doing, with a one-two punch.

This is interesting. Here’s something I just learned recently, about “My Utmost for His Highest.” I had detected a nuance that didn’t seem to line up with the Word, when reading the updated “My Utmost.” The update was done by James Reimann, and the foreword was by Charles Stanley. Lo and behold, when I compared some passages in the updated version with the original, many references to being filled with the Holy Spirit had been removed. How sad this was to me! You are very discerning, and I am sure you have noticed this, if you have compared the two. It is very subtle, though, and took me a couple of years to notice.
Blessings and peace, my brother!
