Back in Pecos
One of the many delights in my life is the annual retreat I make to the Pecos Benedictine Monastery (Pecos, New Mexico). I started coming here in the summer of 2011 when I enrolled in the two-year School of Spiritual Direction.
Much has changed here over the near-decade of visits I’ve made, but one thing remains and that is the charming spirit of God’s Presence. Naturally, God is everywhere and always, but there are recognized “standing stones” of our faith, places where God has met us and indelibly marked Himself upon us. For example, we remember Jacob’s encounter at Bethel when his name was changed to Israel. Pecos is one of the standing stones in my faith journey and it is a delight to count it one of my pilgrimages of the heart during my yearly acts of devotion.
As I reflect, rest, and rejoice during the remainder of this week, I will count my many blessings. I will thank God for His faithfulness in my life, and I will delight in recollecting some of the many standing stones where God has imprinted and seared Himself into my soul.
